Every April, Earth day rolls around and we are reminded that it’s our responsibility to be good stewards of our environment. There are many ways to do this: recycling, conserving water, reducing our carbon footprint. If you’re looking to make some simple changes in your life—changes that allow you to be more “green”—then look no further than your laundry room.
Many laundry detergents are made with phosphates. They are added to improve the cleaning efficiency of a detergent and are especially effective in areas with hard water that make cleaning difficult. But when high levels of phosphates travel down drains and into waterways, they create a hazard for fish, wildlife and aquatic plants.
This has become such a problem that many laws and regulations have been put into place in the U.S. and other countries, limiting—and in some cases, banning—the use of phosphates in detergents.
By choosing a detergent that is phosphate-free, you are helping reduce the amount of phosphates in the water supply and surrounding bodies of water. The fish will thank you for making this green and earth-friendly decision. And when you drink water from your tap, you will thank you.
