How to Wash & Whiten Yellowed Pillows

Spring cleaning unearths some pretty dirty messes at home that are easy to put off. One of the easiest to fix? Dingy, yellowed pillows. According to Martha Stewart, pillows don't need to be thrown out when they start to yellow - they can (and should!) be washed twice a year. Thanks Martha for saving us some cash!

Ok, now we move on to HOW do you wash those pillows, and make them look brand spanking new? One of our favorite bloggers, One Good Thing By Jillee, takes us step by step through her recommendations on knocking out those stains for good.

But how do those stains happen? According to Jillee, "One of the most common reasons why pillows can turn yellow is sweat. Even when you’re sleeping your body continues to sweat to keep your body at a comfortable temperature. Depending on the type of fabric your pillowcase is made from, sweat can seep through the fabric. As the sweat dries, it can leave a yellow stain on the pillow. Even if you use pillow COVERS underneath your pillow CASES, the yellowing can still occur." Gross.

Let's get those bad boys clean!

Step #1: Check the care label to confirm that your pillow (down or synthetic) can be machine washed – most can be.

Step #2: Remove the pillow case and any pillow protector

Step #3: Set the washing machine on the HOT cycle and add your pillows to the washer.

Step #4: Add a Dropps Detergent Pac and start the machine. We recommend tossing in a Dropps Oxi Booster Pac for an extra powerful stain & odor fighting punch plus whitening & brightening.

Really, they can look this good!

Baby Stains? No Problem!

All parents know that life with a newborn can get messy; from food and formula spills to yucky diaper messes, keeping your little one’s clothing clean can be a chore. However, delicate newborn skin can be sensitive to lots of chemicals that traditional detergents contain, which makes it all the more important to use the purest and gentlest products possible when it comes to your children. Thankfully, many Dropps detergents are scent, dye, and enzyme free, leaving nothing behind but clean, safe clothing!

Learning how to tackle even the toughest of stains is something every parent should do, and we’ll be here to help you along the way!

Spit up is one of the most common laundry problems for parents, but it’s actually pretty easy to remove! Depending on how much occurs, scoop as much as you can off of the garment or bib, and then rinse from the back of the stain with cold water to push it back through the fabric. Next, pretreat the area with a 4-in-1 Booster Pac to dissolve any discoloration or smell before washing. Then, wash the garment in the hottest water safe for the fabric (always check the fabric care label for specific washing instructions) and it will be as good as new!

Protein-based stains like formula or baby food can be tougher on our clothing, but there are a few tips and tricks to help you remove them without compromising your little one’s sensitive skin. Typically, enzymes are used to break down the proteins in such stains, but they can also damage the fibers in many fabrics and even irritate delicate skin. Instead, opt for a gentle but effective stain-fighting agent like a Baby Booster Pac for pretreating these types of stains. Just place a pac on top of the effected area and run cold water over it until it dissolves, then scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush until the stain disappears. Lastly, wash in cold water as heat can set in protein-based stains.

Oil stains like baby oil or petroleum jelly can be dissolved with just a little bit of a few products you already have in your home. First, apply baking soda directly onto the stain and gently scrub with a soft-bristled brush. The baking soda will ball up when it absorbs the excess oils, so repeat this process until it no longer balls up. Remove the remaining baking soda and pretreat the area with a touch of dish soap to break down any remaining oil in the fabric, and rub gently between your fingers until the stain is no longer visible. Then, just wash as normal with a stain-fighting detergent made especially with baby safety in mind.

Last but not least, the dreaded potty stains are never ideal, but can be removed fairly easily with the right tools. First and foremost, cold water is the trick to making sure these stains don’t set in. Soak the garment in cold water for 5-10 minutes to loosen the stain. Next, pretreat the area with a 4-in-1 Booster Pac to dissolve the stain completely and then wash it in warm water in the washing machine if the fabric care label gives you the OK—the agitation cycle will help to knock out any remaining stains.

One final and very important tip to washing any and all stains is to act quickly! The quicker you treat it, the less likely it will be to set in. For more information, see all of our Gentle for Baby Collection and our Stain Removal Guide!

We hope these tips are helpful for all you new parents, and just remember, stains happen, but one day you’ll be teaching your little one to do their own laundry!

Happy Washing!
